Microsoft Windows now comes with a free backup software integrated that it can be accessed by clicking on , , , and .

The majority of Unix systems come with a plethora of options software backup, including dd, cpio, tar and dump.

If the basic and free backup software included with your operating system do not satisfy your needs, you might want to look at some of these broader free backup software packages.

Cobian Backup

Cobian Backup is a program of multiple threads that can be used to schedule and copies of files and directories from their original location to other directories/drives on the same computer or another computer on the network. FTP backup is also supported in both directions (loading and unloading).

Cobian Backup exists in two different versions: application and service. The program uses very few resources and can be running in the background on your system, checking of backup scheduling and execution of backups when necessary.

Cobian Backup is not a usual backup application: copies only the files and folders in original or compressed mode to other destination, creating a backup as a result. Therefore Cobian Backup can be best described as a "backup scheduler".

Cobian Backup supports several methods of compression and strong encryption.

Freebyte backup

Freebyte backup is a freeware backup program for Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP. Freebyte backup allows you to copy and easily filter) a large number of files and directories from various sources in a backup directory.

It is possible to backup all files found in the specified set of input directories, or only certain file types copied. You can filter files based on file extensions. For example, you can specify that you want that all .doc, .rtf, .jpg, .bmp files, but any .exe, .dll, and backup .txt files. You can very easily define new file extensions to be added to the filter.

AMANDA

AMANDA, the Advanced Maryland Automatic Network Disk Archiver, is a system backup which allows the administrator of a LAN to configure a single server main backup to back up multiple hosts to a single large capacity tape drive.

AMANDA uses native dump and/or GNU tar facilities and can back up a large number of workstations running multiple versions of Unix. AMANDA can also use SAMBA to the backup hosts that are running Microsoft Windows.

afbackup is a system backup client / server allowing many workstations to backup to a central server (concurrently or in series).

Backups can initiate remote from the server or clients cron jobs.

afbackup has been tested on Linux, FreeBSD, AIX, IRIX, Digital Unix (OSF1), Solaris and HP-UX. Afbackup customer has also been tested on SunOS and OpenBSD.
