Now, that the Windows Phone 7 is launched and the devices will be available from a month’s time, it is time to look back at the whole hullabaloo surrounding the launch and its aftermath.
It was one of the most awaited launches of this year. We guess it is the right time now to retrospect on Windows Phone 7- what is good and what could be improved. In short, what could you expect from Windows Phone 7.
Good things first: While there is one iPhone and one Android, Microsoft offers you nine of their devices. You could take your pick from those that have a huge screen, those which have a keyboard and those who want an external device which has high decibels. This, they are launching in more than 15 countries and with the help from more than 25 carriers. This could prove a major competition to the iPhones and the Androids.
Windows Phone 7 comes with one continuous vertical home screen that can display live information. It can also serve as an application launcher at the same time. You could add whatever you want to your home page like whole of a photo album, people and also playlists which makes it more convenient for the user to operate.
These might be the only good features of the Windows Phone 7. The one major problem with Windows Phone 7 is its Copy/Paste feature which is missing. Though Microsoft has taken note of it and is rectifying it by the early half of next year, it might prove as a hindrance for that period of time.
The number of applications on the devices too are not that impressive considering that these devices are competing with the likes of iPhone and Android. There are roughly around 2,000 apps for Windows Phone 7. This is a really low number considering that Android has more than 50,000 applications as of now. Unless, Microsoft improves the numbers by leaps and bounds in a short time, they might lose out on a number of customers.
Microsoft has got variety, the money to market it and the reach. But there are few things which are missing, simple things like an attractive homepage and more applications. If these things are corrected, Microsoft may achieve what they want to- a huge market share in the mobiles industry. With carriers like HTC, Samsung, LG and Dell running the OS on their devices, it might turn into a reality soon.
