St Paul Android tables by students project

Heard from a familiar source for the project to the College of St. Paul in Pasig is in the process of acquisition of 5,000 units of Android tablets for its students which will replace most of the textbooks.

Apparently, Tablet PC draft eventually replaces books being used by the school for its students. The transition will take place in the coming school year.

Invited several vendors of tender: Apple, RedFox, Archos, Acer and Toshiba, among others. St. Paul has some requirements in the hardware (2.2 Froyo Android) operating system and of course the price.

It is a relatively large, taking into account that is 5,000 units. I was told that this is only an initial roll-out that will probably be for students of secondary Pasig branch for the meantime. The cost of the tablets will be added to student fees. It should offset the cost of textbooks which goes to tens of thousands a year.

Saint Paul is going to do some testing and development, which may include research applications and other tools in education, students can use. Of course, there will be provisions for safety and parental control.

If the tablet will last for approximately 2 to 3 years, may be cheaper than the real books. Now is what I would call a Tablet PC by student program!

Update: talked with several people who are familiar with the project. Results from several other schools are doing something similar. St. Scholastica and of Salle GreenHills are also looking into the Tablet PC solution.

As regards initiatives of St. Paul, seems that Jun Lozada is the man behind the idea (is technical adviser of the nuns in these schools) and is very inflexible envelope goes for Android.
